Presently, when someone asks what type of computer you are using, it is usually a question based not on platform, but brand name. No one in their right mind would use anything save a Wintel type of machine, right? In fact despite the advertising, both printed and on television, as well as product placement, there are still a number of people who are unaware that there is another computing platform. This was not the case back in 1980. duringthat time there was only one computing platform. When the Apple II was born, it was by itself. There were no other PC's.
The Apple Macintosh is a premiere design tool, one that Jim Gleeson has been using since 1985. He used an Apple IIe, back when it was the one of the few computers on the market.
Herein lies a number of links to some of my favorite Mac realted sites. Included also, for you the Microserf, are a list of the stengths of the Mac as well as its weaknesses. Here is jim in his own words.
In High school we had a computer math course where we created mathematicsal programs using basic programming techniques. The only computer available for this was an Apple IIe. We had about eight of them in the lab. We shared things on 5 1/4" disks. We booted programs from these disks as well as there was no hard drive.
DOS was the operating system. The graphics were monochromatic, but you could hook up your IIe to a television to get a couple of more colors as well. computing was in its infancy.
But then after I gradulated high School it was rumored there would be a new computer. It would be simple, it would be an all-in-one piece of hardware. The name of it at that time was Liza, but soon the Mac came out in its stead. The first time I used it, i fell in love.
My father used it for his business. But I mainly used it for writing. We also got our first hard drive back in 1986 or somewhere thereabouts. It was big, about the size of a watermelon. And it made big clunky noises.
